If you’re headed west to Yellowstone National Park, here’s a great campground to definitely check out. It sits down the road at the foot of those snow-capped mountains you see in the distance.

Yellowstone Holiday at Hebgen Lake was a real find. Even though it’s been three years since we visited there, we’ve probably talked about it at least once a month since and dream of the day we can go back. Located 13 miles from the West entrance of Yellowstone National Park, it is close enough to be convenient, yet far enough to leave the commercialism behind. I’ve always said they were just big enough to have what you need, but small enough to let you feel like you were immersed in nature.
After getting parked on lot #6, climbed out of the truck and immediately heard the eagles overhead. Oh boy….this is going to be a great stay. This is the view out the front door.
Out the back window, we were able to watch the eagles soar high above to their nests up on the hill across the road. Camping neighbors told of elk and bear coming down into camp. BUT….even with all that nature, I still had a store, laundromat, etc at the park entrance. I told you…..best of both worlds. Streets were hard packed dirt; sites were level, full hook-up with concrete patios. I honestly don’t remember what type, if any of cable or internet we had. With all those views to look at, wasn’t much interested.
Molly and I took a walk every morning down to the marina just to see what was going on. Huge flocks of white pelicans came in to land on the lake and Molly waited patiently on top of a picnic table while I tried to get a good shot. Sadly, I did not, so you’ll have to settle for a shot of Molly instead.
You can see why we hated to leave, and long to get back there.
I actually enjoyed that we could leave the campground, be inside of Yellowstone in mere minutes, and do all of our sightseeing. Yet, when the day was done and we had enough of people and traffic, we were once again back to the Yellowstone Holiday gazing up at the stars.
36 RV sites and 24 cabins. Since we had family joining us there without an RV, it made the perfect reunion spot. The cabin dwellers in our crew reported the cabins were great. Would definitely check them out if you’re in the area. 16990 Hebgen Lake Road, West Yellowstone, MT 59758. Call toll free: (877) 646-4242. yhr@wyellowstone.com
